The skill that I choose to focus on for my task analysis with my student is blowing his nose. He appears to have really strong allergies and has had a very hard time with his nose constantly running. However, he never initiates getting a tissue on his own and taking care of his need. The teacher always has to assist him with getting his nose clean and it happens multiple times a day. I also know that it frustrates him when someone does it for him. I feel that it would be very beneficial for him to be able to learn to complete this skill independently.
These will be my steps:
- Get a tissue from the box
- Hold the tissue to your nose
- Blow out of your nose (not mouth)
- Wipe your nose and face
- Throw the tissue in the trash
- Go to the bathroom
- Check your face to make sure it is clean
- Wash your hands
Great idea for a task analysis. Every student needs to learn to blow his own nose. I have some students that can't seem to blow out. They just don't get it. I try to model for them, but that can get kind of messy too. Another tricky thing about students wiping their own nose is that they tend to smear it around. You may want to think about teaching them to pinch their noses with the tissue, using two hands and coming together. Just a thought as I think about my students smearing their mess around their faces.
ReplyDeleteWashing your hands is an important step that many people forget! Blowing your nose is a skill that is difficult for many children, so the visual you make will benefit all the children in the class.
ReplyDeleteBlowing your nose is an important personal hygiene skill that children need to learn. I can relate to you in the fact that I have some children who do not necessarily know they need to get a tissue. Your steps are broken down into easy simple steps. How will you help he learn to initiate this action on his own?
ReplyDeleteThis is a task that I think all kids have problems with. I did not realize, until I saw it written here perhaps, how many steps are involved in blowing ones nose. I wonder if it is too many steps though for every child to be successful. Perhaps instead of go to the bathroom, check your face, wash your hands, etc. it could just be throw tissue away, get purrell or wash hands. Nonetheless, I feel that this is a skill that children of all developmental levels will benefit from.
